UK Expo 2020 Pavilion – Defining the Vision

Expo 2020 in Dubai was a global event that attracted over 24 million visitors (+ 250 million online) from all corners of the world.

The UK Pavilion, designed by artist and set designer Es Devlin, displayed an evolving series of poetic messages on the exterior structure. The concept was to communicate a universal, message by converting the words of visitors into a shared vision for the future, through the medium of an AI algorithm.

ARC’s challenge was to make this bold artistic concept both accessible and meaningful for a diverse global audience.

Research, Content Development & Storytelling

ARC was responsible for the research, content development, and scripting of the pavilion’s experience.

The team worked closely with developers to understand the sophisticated software that translated visitor words into poetry. Through this process, TGAC developed a cohesive storyline that explained the technology and its importance in a way that visitors could easily grasp.

In addition to the poetic experience, the UK Pavilion also showcased the country’s innovation in areas such as energy transition, medicine, and space exploration. The ARD team interviewed leaders in the field of AI, medical science, energy research and space travel. We then translated the complex and technical information into accessible and engaging content that showcased the role of UK industries within the larger narrative of global collaboration and progress.

Visitor Journey

ARC’s work extended to the narrative-led graphic design of the UK Pavilion, ensuring the visitor experience was both immersive and comprehensible. ARC collaborated with Avant Garde, the design company, to create large-scale graphics and visuals that would complement the space.

Using a concept of increasing scale, the exhibition displayed innovations starting with microscopic advancements and expanding to large-scale projects like space exploration, thus connecting the UK’s contributions to global and galactic challenges.

Interactive elements, such as an app and digital displays, helped visitors understand their role in the experience and the significance of their participation.

A Model for Future Storytelling

The UK Pavilion at Expo 2020 exemplified how complex ideas could be made accessible and inspiring through effective storytelling and design.

ARC’s role in concept design, research, scripting, and narrative-led graphic design ensured that the message of global connection and innovation was conveyed powerfully, allowing visitors from around the world to feel part of the ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’ story.
